Josette Miner (née Brissette), the daughter of Métis matriarch Archange L’Hirondelle and fur trader Hyppolite Brissette, was raised within the rich history and connections of her Georgian Bay Métis Community.
Known for her work as a midwife and herbalist, Josette held deep ties to families throughout the Upper Great Lakes. Drawing on Métis knowledge passed down from her mother, she used traditional medicines and healing practices to care for those around her. Josette’s vocations supported the health and wellbeing of many families, making her a trusted and respected figure among other Métis families.
Josette was also known for her artistic talents, particularly her beadwork. She created beautifully beaded pieces that were cherished by her family, including an octopus bag that remains in her family’s possession today.Â
Through both her healing practices and her artistry, Josette’s life reflects the many ways Métis women have contributed to the strength and resilience of their communities. Josette’s legacy continues through the generations of family she helped nurture and the strong community connections she helped maintain along the shores of Georgian Bay.
