Historically, Moose Factory was a prominent trading hub that served as the home and birthplace of many Métis families throughout the 19th century. Among them were William Moore and Jane McLeod, whose marriage reflected the strong cultural, economic, and kinship ties forming around Moose Factory during this period.

Jane McLeod was born in Abitibi in 1859 and was raised within a close-knit Métis community where family, trade, and relationships with the land were deeply interconnected.

While the exact date of their marriage is unknown, William and Jane began raising their family around 1890 with the birth of their son, Henry Frank Moore.

Both Jane and William consistently asserted their Métis identity in historical records, identifying themselves as “halfbreeds.” Further demonstrating their Métis identity, William Moore was one of the five signatories to the 1905 Moose Factory petition, sent from the "halfbreeds of Moose Factory.” William’s participation alongside Jane’s brothers, George and William McLeod, highlights the family’s collective involvement in Métis political advocacy and community leadership.

Both William and Jane continued to live and work in Moose Factory until their old age, leaving behind a proud legacy for future generations.
